SummerSlam will be WWE’s biggest event of 2021 and one of the biggest events in WWE history as we head to the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on Saturday, August 21. Some of my favorite matches of my career have been at SummerSlam, along with some of the most iconic matches in WWE history. I look back at 2017, when I faced off against Naomi at a sold-out Barclays Center in Brooklyn and won the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Naomi was my opponent but also a close personal friend of mine, and someone whom I have the utmost respect for. We poured our hearts into that match. When I won the Smackdown Women’s Championship that night, our match truly embodied all of our hard work we had been putting in for years. I still watch it back to this day with so much gratitude for what we accomplished together that night as strong, powerful women in WWE.
Another match that was very special to me was my showdown with Becky Lynch in 2019 at SummerSlam in Toronto. We had the opening match that night with the intent to steal the show, and that we did. I remember deciding I was going to carry the Canadian flag to the ring because I’ve always been so proud of my Canadian roots much like my family, who have proudly carried the Canadian flag to the ring in the past. I was so pumped for the chance to wrestle Becky Lynch in my home country, with Bret Hart in attendance cheering me on.
My inspiration for the match at SummerSlam with Becky was from the rivalry that my uncle Bret Hart had against Steve Austin at WrestleMania 13. Getting advice before our match from Bret backstage at SummerSlam was truly a full circle moment. Speaking of the Hitman, an epic SummerSlam match from the past that stands the test of time is none other than Bret Hart vs The British Bulldog from SummerSlam 1992 with over 80,000 people in attendance at Wembley Stadium. I still go back and watch it to find inspiration as a competitor.
