I remember first receiving the news that WWE would be having its first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble match and was I extremely excited.

Historically, the event had only held a men’s Royal Rumble match, so this was a huge step in WWE’s women’s evolution and we knew had to make the most of this moment.

As plans unfolded, it became evident that WWE was about to celebrate WWE’s female Superstars of the past, present and future like never before.

I would be getting a chance to share the ring with some of the icons I looked up to, like Trish Stratus, Lita, Molly Holly, Jaqueline, Beth Phoenix, Kelly Kelly, Torrie Wilson and Michelle McCool. These women helped pave the way for generations of future female WWE Superstars. The match would also feature women from WWE’s NXT brand, including Kairi Sane and NXT Women’s Champion Ember Moon.

The day of the Rumble, I was so nervous. I’m usually nervous before any appearance, but this was a special kind.

There were so many incredible women that I’d be sharing the ring with; some of whom I’ve only dreamt about competing against. I had goosebumps thinking about being in the same ring as Trish Stratus, who is one of my biggest inspirations in WWE. I would also get the chance to get back in the ring with my best friend in the world, former WWE women’s champion, Beth Phoenix. I wondered what it would be like if Ember Moon and I locked horns.

My imagination was truly running wild.

Finding out who would be competing in the Rumble was just as exciting for me as it was for the WWE Universe.

it’s hard to believe it’s been one year since I started writing this column for the Calgary Sun.

Sharing my thoughts and life in this column each week has been a special experience. Ever since I was a kid I have loved writing. It has always been one of my passions.

Although I am not sure if I am good at it, I have always enjoyed it, and I was awarded the “Fifth Grade Writing Award” in elementary school. Just saying.

Writing is very liberating and therapeutic. Writing has always been an incredible outlet for me to feel like I have a voice, even when sometimes I was the only one reading my work. It has been a way for me to unlock my imagination. That’s when the world becomes yours, after all.

When I was growing up, I remember my uncle Bret “Hitman” Hart having his own column in the Calgary Sun. To me, this was beyond cool.

Not only was he WWE champion, but every Saturday his very own column was published in the paper in our hometown, often with one of his incredible hand drawn cartoons. Bret’s column was fun to read, and I always looked forward to reading it each week.

In WWE, one of the most important things I’ve learned in my decade-long career is that working together and “playing well with others” is a key to success. I’m very independent at times and always have been.

Despite working on TV in front of millions of people each week, I like to do things by myself like traveling, shopping and working out. At times, I am a loner.

Upwards of 300 days a year, I share a locker room with an amazing group of women on SmackDown Live. We perform around the globe night in and night out and must keep ourselves in great conditioning and, more importantly, healthy.

A lot of my career is based on working with others; something that is so important but not often discussed. In the women’s locker room, we don’t always agree with each other, just ask my in-ring nemesis Charlotte Flair.

But at the end of the day, when it comes to entertaining the WWE Universe, we realize that collaborating on our ideas and giving one another input as well as constructive criticism is extremely helpful.

There are times when someone might offer up a suggestion I don’t entirely agree with, but I am willing to give their idea a chance because I want my co-workers to give my ideas a chance, too. Teamwork is the same in any relationship, whether personal or professional: it’s give and take. Compromise is everything.

When it comes to working together, there is no greater example I can think of than WWE’s newest offering, “Mixed Match Challenge.” This is a weekly show available in Canada on WWE Network that consists of several mixed tag teams working together to compete against another team for charity.

Monday Night Raw is the longest-running weekly episodic show in United States television history. To quote Stone Cold Steve Austin … oh, hell yeah!

There have been many incredible memories the WWE Universe has experienced in two and a half decades of Raw. Just imagine how many mudholes Stone Cold stomped into foes during that time? How many souls did The Undertaker reap? How many eyebrows did The Rock raise or Sharpshooters did Bret “The Hitman” Hart dish out on his way to victory?

There have been many memories that I can personally share that are close to Calgary’s very own Hart family.

Did you know that The Hitman and The Rock competed against each other on Raw? It was an incredible moment.

The first-ever European Champion was crowned on Raw. That match featured my uncles, the “British Bulldog” Davey Boy Smith going against Owen Hart in a classic match.

There were lots of new beginnings on Raw, too, like the Hart Foundation faction of Bret Hart, Jim Neidhart, Brian Pillman, Owen Hart and The British Bulldog that was first formed on Raw. The current WWE Universal Champion Brock Lesnar also made his debut on Monday Night Raw in 2002 and has been a force to be reckoned with ever since.

In my opinion, there is such a thing called the winter blues. I’ve experienced them first hand, especially after the holidays. It’s easy to get in a rut and lack motivation once the excitement is over.

So what do I do to beat the winter blues? I try to stay as positive as possible. There are times when it’s cold, dark and dreary outside and all I want to do is curl up on my couch with a cup of hot cocoa and turn on my favorite Seinfeld reruns.

Something that can instantly lift my mood is hitting the gym with a friend. Friends hold you accountable and when we work out together I always find myself being more competitive but also having more fun at the same time. Going to work out with a friend also forces me to “keep the date” because it’s more difficult to bail on them. A good friend at the gym can go a long way. So pass the barbell!

Something that helps me build more optimism in the dead of winter is not staying up too late and waking up early. I find that when I wake up earlier I get to experience more sunlight, which to me has a subliminal way of keeping us all more positive. It can sometimes be challenging being on the road and finishing our WWE Live events late at night but the earlier I can go to bed and the earlier I can wake up in the morning, the more of a productive routine I can get into. The more I accomplish before noon, like returning phone calls, answering emails, running errands and checking off my “to do list,” the better I feel about taking time for myself without feeling guilty.

Two weeks ago, on Monday Night Raw, Stephanie McMahon announced the historic first-ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match will take place on January 28. To say I was excited would be an understatement. I can’t begin to describe how important this match is for the entire WWE Women’s division. It’s humbling, awesome and in many ways hard to describe. To be able to share this moment with the other women who share the same passion that I have makes it even more special. We step in the ring against each other nearly every night, but at the end of the day, we all share the same objective, to entertain the WWE Universe and make WWE history.

There have been so many firsts for the WWE Women’s division over the past few years, but for me this one ranks right near the top. The Royal Rumble is rich with history and one of the most popular events in WWE history.

The match will feature 30 Superstars entering the ring, all attempting to be the final woman standing, with the winner receiving a Championship opportunity at WrestleMania 34 in New Orleans. Participants are eliminated when they’ve been sent over the top rope and both feet touch the floor below. Creative ways of avoiding elimination and surprise entrants are staples of the Rumble, and is part of what make it such a draw for fans and WWE Superstars alike.

The possibilities are endless. Could we see the return of Trish Stratus?! Will we see Lita? Jazz? Are any NXT Superstars going to make their debut? The very first Royal Rumble match was January 24, 1988 at the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario. It was won by Hacksaw Jim Duggan, who eliminated One Man Gang to be the last man standing. Fans have never forgotten that historic win by Hacksaw. The Royal Rumble takes place Sunday, January 28 from Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. It airs live on WWE Network and will officially kick off the road to WrestleMania. The Hart family has a rich history with the Royal Rumble, with my father, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart and my uncle, Bret “Hitman” Hart, having both competed in the very first event way back in 1988 in Hamilton. My father was entrant No. 4. When I told him I was competing in the first ever Women’s Royal Rumble Match, he was almost as happy as me.
